We asked our student, M., to describe his learning experience with the Sulam L’Atid NGO. He wrote (The names have been omitted to respect personal privacy.):
“Hi. My name is M… I am a tenth grader at the … High School in Jerusalem. I want to tell you about the help I’m receiving.
The first time I met Z… (M’s volunteer tutor from the Sulam L’Atid NGO) I discovered that she could guide me to a high level of achievement. In my classes on language and literature I didn’t understand the meaning of the lessons. I didn’t understand the homework I was given or the tasks assigned in class. After a few lessons with Z… I found that my grades improved. My teachers in these subjects couldn’t understand what a leap I’d made in their classes from an academic standpoint. I would finish the work assigned in class quickly, and all my answers were good.
After I finished learning with Z… the first year she offered to tutor me the next year, and if I’d like, during the summer, too. I’ve learned with her for two years, and thanks to her my grades improved. This motivated me to improve in all of the subjects I learn. It was an amazing feeling to know that I’m capable of doing more. My tutor would also offer me food and beverage. I would feel very comfortable with her. She showed me respect. She did it from her heart. When she tutored me no one forced her to do it. She volunteered for my sake. All of my success is due to her.
This caused me to understand and know that I can work at a good job and to understand what I want to do when I grow up. I know that after my army service I want to continue learning and acquiring knowledge. There was a time that I didn’t feel this way. I didn’t know what I wanted to be or do. Thanks to these lessons I understood what I’ll do, and I discovered what my wants and ambitions are.
Through these lessons I understood that it is important to learn, because knowledge is power. These lessons motivated me to continue to learn in life, to become knowledgeable and to improve, and all this is owing to the help I’ve had from everyone.”
