In 2014 the Sulam L’Atid NGO won an honorary prize from the
Covenant Foundation in New York City. In the program for the
awards dinner the Covenant Foundation wrote:
“Sulam L’Atid
Sulam L’Atid—Ladder to the Future—was founded in 2012 by
retired Israeli judge Gary T’har-Lev after he learned that one-fifth
of Israeli high school students must work during the school year
to help support their families. This reality seemed to guarantee
keeping impoverished Israelis out of higher education, thus
perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Sulam L’Atid operates in the
Katamon Neighborhood in Jerusalem and ensures that gifted
high school students, who otherwise would need to work to
support their families throughout the school year, have the
opportunity to enrich their educational experiences. The
organization provides these students with afterschool
educational programs (enrichment as well as tutoring) and
weekly food stipends for their families, giving them the
opportunity to focus solely on their studies. The staff of Sulam
L’Atid is comprised solely of volunteers, and all donations to the
organization go directly to purchasing food vouchers for
participants.”
